Scoliosis is a condition where the individual vertebral segments of the spinal column shift out of their normal alignment, creating a lateral curvature of the spine.

Scoliosis Q&A

What causes scoliosis?

To know the cause of the scoliosis, you must first know what type of scoliosis you have. The first type is called a congenital scoliosis. This could have been cause by a malformed sacrum, lower lumbar or middle thoracic vertebral segment at birth. Congenital scoliosis will not be straightened unless there is surgical intervention involved. Typically, congenital scoliosis is painless and occurs more often in females than in males.

There is also what is called a simple scoliosis, which is cause by a medial displacement of the vertebral disc at a single level or multiple levels of the spinal column, creating a lateral curvature. There is no rotation of the spinal segments which makes it the easiest type of scoliosis to correct.

Rotatory scoliosis occurs when there is lateral vertebral disc protrusion of a vertebral segment, as well as rotation of the spinal segments. This is a much more complex type of scoliosis making it difficult to correct.

How can chiropractic care help with scoliosis?

After a specific analysis of your spine, the chiropractor will be able to determine where the specific cause of your scoliosis is coming from. By carefully correcting the misalignments in the spine and relieving nerve pressure, regular chiropractic care will help your body will begin to function properly. Over time it is possible for these segments to straighten and regain proper spinal structure.
